Chocolate-dipped Strawberries

What’s simple, sweet, addictive, easy to make and leaves them begging for more?

Chocolate-dipped strawberries.

Don’t take my word for it – try it yourself and watch people crawl over each other like zombies trying to grab the last one. Watch out though – make them once and now you’re indispensable…

There are only two ingredients, but no one is going to believe you, so why tell them?

  • 2 cups fresh strawberries
  • 3 oz semi-sweet baking chocolate

They come together in about 10 minutes and then take roughly 15 minutes to set, so they are a great dessert to put together when surprise company comes by. I have trouble sharing these – maybe you’ll be more magnanimous than I.

First, fill a saucepan halfway with water and heat it to boiling.

half full of water

Get out the strawberries and rinse them in cool water. Let them dry on a clean towel.

just washed

Dry each little gem again with paper towel and slice off their tops. Chocolate doesn’t stick to wet or even slightly moist strawberries.

dried and destemmed

Set out a dinner plate covered in waxed paper.

Now, it’s time for the chocolate.

Roughly chop 3 ounces and place the pieces in a metal bowl.

Put the metal bowl over the boiling water. Trust me, don’t melt chocolate over direct heat. No one likes scorched chocolate and the whole boiling water thing isn’t so bad.

Put an oven mitt on your left hand so that you can hold the edge of the bowl comfortably while you stir the chocolate to promote faster melting with a spoon in your right hand.

almost melted

Halfway there….

Done! Ok – now you have to work quickly – that’s why the strawberries get prepared first. Roll each berry in the melted chocolate and place them on the waxed paper far enough apart that they do not touch each other and dry together.

roll and rest on waxed paper

Put the strawberries in the refrigerator and wait for at least 15 minutes for the chocolate to harden. Once it is dry to the touch, remove them from the waxed paper to your serving dish.

lets eat

These ones were gone in 5 minutes flat.

NOTE: This is better eaten on the day it was made. Since they’re so easy, make them fresh.

There were 21 strawberries in the clamshell I bought and they were 416 grams. Here’s the nutrition per strawberry:

  1. I must confess, I’m a cheater and use the microwave to heat smaller batches for dipping. I also drizzle it on raspberries etc, when I’m in the mood, but often times I enjoy the fruit naked!
